I’m Niall, an R&D Software Engineer at the intersection of Computer Graphics and Machine Learning, with specific interests in Physics-Based Simulation, Neural Rendering, and VR/XR. My career began age 17 in the Visual Effects industry, where I spent over six years as an FX Technical Director at companies like Framestore and Scanline VFX. This included a career highlight – working on a VFX Emmy winning episode of Game of Thrones in 2019, where I developed multiple large scale fluid simulation setups and shot work for the the destruction of ‘Kings Landing’.
Always drawn to the technical side, I transitioned to R&D in 2021, completing an MSc in Computer Science (High-Performance Graphics) at the University of Leeds in 2023. My dissertation focused on using ML/DL to accelerate real-time fluid simulations. Prior to graduating I spent a short time at Industrial Light and Magic within Disney (London) as a R&D Engineer. I’m proud to have achieved a distinction, without a prior undergraduate degree or any education beyond GCSE level.
This site showcases my personal and work-related projects, and I also host some of my open-source code on GitHub. I’ve planned to start a tech blog since 2020… I’m still planning!
Recent Life / Career Update (2024-2025)
Since summer 2024, I’ve been dealing with a significant personal and professional setback that has had major impacts on my health, stability, and ability to work. While I’m not currently active professionally, I’m taking time to recover and reflect on what happened and what it reveals about systemic issues in our industry and beyond.
I will be back … (I hope :D)
